...it follows the Fibonacci sequence, what they call "nature's numbering system." In da Vinci's time, it was thought to represent the perfect proportions that artists and architects would strive to follow to create harmony in line and drawing.
Origin
Leaonardo of Pisa (c. 1175-1220), or Leanardo Pisana, in Italian, was known as the "greatest mathematician in Europe," now known as Fibonacci, short for filius Bonacci, or son of Bonaccio. He was one of the first people to introduce the Hindu-Arabic number system into Europe - the positional system we use today - based on ten digits with its decimal point and a symbol for zero: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
