noun STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where demanding academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and, with it, the ability to compete in the new economy.
STEM-Ed is a field that is growing quicker than educators can keep up with it. Advances in science along with rapid changes in technology make it a challenge to help students acquire up-to-date skills.
Origin
In 1958, with the launch of the first manned Russian Sputnik rocket, President John F. Kennedy recognized the need for Americans to gain the technical skills and expertise to keep pace with the Russians and advance America's capacity to compete in a "race to the moon" and beyond.
